Poetry competition for scientists and engineers
30 May 2013
Now in its second year, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Poetry Competition sets out to show that the creativity and innovation necessary in science and engineering can produce poetry too!
Organised by Dr Peter Fenn, Reader from Mechanical Aerospace and Civil Engineering, the competition invites poems written by any student in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences showing the creative and human aspects of science and engineering.
Funded by the EPS Strategic Fund, this year’s competition attracted 171 submissions from every school in the Faculty. Dr Peter Fenn together with Dr John Mcauliffe, Reader in Creative Writing from the School of Arts, Histories and Cultures had the difficult task of short-listing the entries before sending their selection to poets Wendy Cope and Lachlan Mackinnon who ultimately picked the winner and runners up.
First prize this year went to Ruth Sullivan, an undergraduate student from Textile Science and Technology for her offering ‘A Poem About Love and Passion’ which you can read, along with all the runner up entries, at:
