In Place of Growth: look at other ways of measuring social and economic progress

16 May 2013

Workshop on Thursday, 13 June (12 noon to 2pm) in Room AG9, Ellen Wilkinson Building.

Has economic growth had its day? If so, what notion(s) do we need to replace it? What new language can we use to encapsulate those notions?

This exciting workshop is for people concerned with exploring alternatives to aggregate economic growth as the primary measure of economic and social progress in the region and the language we need to powerfully describe those alternatives.

Using world cafe style, it will be participative and promote networking and conversations about the burning issues for each and every participant.

Steady State Manchester was established in the summer of 2012 to increase the urgency with which Manchester responds to environmental limits and to challenge the continued pursuit of unselective economic growth.

SSM’s two reports 'In Place of Growth' and 'Living Well' develop practical steps towards a Manchester where people can thrive within safe and just environmental limits. We aim to ensure that our proposals and efforts are as well informed as possible and your insights will be of value.

Participants are asked to read and engage with the 'IPOG' and 'Living Well' reports, or a short executive summary of the report as examples of an attempt to introduce new thinking on ecological justice and economics, and consider SSM's working proposals for the region.

The reports can be accessed at:

For an example of how further economic growth remains the primary goal of regional development, see the AGMA Greater Manchester Strategy:

Your comments and questions will form the basis of the workshop.

You are welcome to bring your lunch. Drinks will be available.
