Students
These pages summarise the University's insurance cover insofar as it applies to its students. It is not possible to consider all circumstances, and specific questions relating to insurance should be referred to the Insurance Office.
The content of these pages may be subject to change, and should be checked from time to time.
University's liability
The University has in place public liability and professional indemnity insurance policies in respect of its own legal liabilities that provide an assurance to its students (and others) that resources are available to meet successful claims against University.
The University's employers' liability insurance does not provide cover for students in respect of activities forming part of their studies. It does provide cover for students whilst working for the University (e.g. as student demonstrators).
The University does not accept liability for the personal property of students. However, personal possessions insurance is provided for students' property in University-managed halls of residence as part of the accommodation package in most cases - check with the residence to confirm.
Students' liability
The University's public liability insurance provides cover for the University's legal liabilities arising out of the acts or omissions of the University and its students. This cover protects any student who is joined in any legal action that is, or could be, taken against the University.
The University's insurance does not cover students in respect of any acts or omissions on their part (unless the University could be considered to have at least partial legal liability).
Travel insurance
Worldwide travel insurance cover is provided for students travelling on University business and for students travelling in connection with their course or an approved sporting activity, with a small number of exceptions. For further details visit:
