External activities
This is a summary of the University of Manchester's insurance cover for both staff and students insofar as it applies to activities undertaken away from the University, whether in the United Kingdom or abroad, including:
- Exhibitions
- Fieldwork
- Promotional events
- Road shows
- Secondments
- Placements
- Courses
The summary cannot cover all possible circumstances, and specific questions relating to insurance should be referred to the Insurance Office.
In particular, secondments to, and placements with, other organisations outside the University and arrangements for attending courses at other institutions would normally be subject to specific agreement with the host organisation. This may affect the insurance position.
The content of these pages may be subject to change, and should be checked from time to time.
Travel
Worldwide travel insurance cover is provided for anyone travelling on University business and for students travelling in connection with their course or an approved sporting activity, with a small number of exceptions. For further details visit:

University Property
Cover for University property used for activities undertaken away from University premises is provided under the University travel insurance up to a limit of £3,000 per traveller for up to a year, or under the goods in transit insurance up to a limit of £500,000 for up to 3 months (subject to conditions).
The Insurance Office should be notified if equipment is to be left unattended in an unsecured location at any time.
Motor Vehicles
University owned (and leased) vehicles are insured for use throughout the European Union, and in Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland, Croatia and Switzerland. The cover may be extendable to other countries on request to the Insurance Office.
Cover for vehicles hired abroad must be arranged locally.
If necessary, cover can be arranged for vehicles to be used in the UK on temporary hire by request to the Insurance Office.
Breakdown cover for University vehicles is limited to the UK, but may be extendable to other countries by request to the Insurance Office.

Public Liability
The University's public liability insurance policies provide cover of up to £50,000,000 for the University's legal liabilities arising out of the acts or omissions of the University its staff (including voluntary assistants) and students. This cover protects any staff or student who is joined in any legal action that is, or could be, taken against the University.
The insurance cover for legal liabilities may be conditional on the University not having accepted liabilities under contract that it would not have without the existence of the contract. Care should be taken in respect of contracts that include clauses to this effect.
The University's insurance does not cover staff or students in respect of any acts or omissions on their part (unless the University could be considered to have at least partial legal liability).

Employers' liability and professional indemnity
In general, the University's employers' liability and professional indemnity insurance covers staff (and others working directly for the University) wherever they are working on University business, but does not cover students who are on a placement with an external organisation whether as part of their studies or otherwise.
For student placements the expectation is that the host organisation will provide employers' liability and professional indemnity cover.
Cover for medical malpractice for staff and students is much more limited and advice should be sought from the Insurance Office.
