About the programme

The Humanities New Academics Programme (HNAP) is designed to ensure that our new academics are fully equipped to work effectively within in relation to the full breadth of tasks associated with their posts at the University of Manchester.

While being perfectly aligned with our university’s aspirations and goals set out in our strategy, Our Future, the HNAP is designed to provide the best possible support for our new colleagues in forging successful academic careers both at Manchester and within their wider disciplinary communities.

A new programme for 2020-21

Under the direction of the associate dean for academic and research staff development, Professor Linda Evans, the HNAP underwent substantial redesign during 2020, with a significantly renovated programme being rolled out in the 2020-21 academic year. Academics enrolling on the HNAP from the Autumn of 2020 will be the first cohort to participate in the new HNAP.

A research-informed programme

It is very important that all aspects of the University of Manchester’s academic work are research-informed, reflecting the university’s status as a world-leading research-intensive institution. The HNAP is no exception, with many workshop sessions being delivered by the university’s own researchers of topics such as teaching and learning, leadership, widening participation in HE, working with international students, researcher development, and mental health.

Linda Evans, who has overseen the new programme’s design and content, is a professor of education whose research specialisms and expertise include: professional development; academic working life; academic leadership; and research leadership. She has ensured that the HNAP content is informed by the most up-to-date research in these fields.
