Outstanding Staff Awards

The Outstanding Staff Awards for Teaching, Learning and Student Experience are the opportunity for students to recognise staff in Humanities who have provided an excellent teaching and student experience. These awards celebrate the dedication, innovation, and commitment of our staff, whose efforts significantly enhance the academic journey and personal development of our students.

Following nominations made by our students, we are delighted to announce the winners of the Outstanding Staff Awards for the 2023/24 academic year, as well as those who have been highly commended. Congratulations on your achievements!

Outstanding Teaching (Lecturers and Teaching Assistants) Award

The Outstanding Teaching award is for lecturers and teaching assistants who have inspired students to learn and reach their potential.

They may engage and challenge students in a supportive manner, motivating them to learn.

This award recognises teaching staff who consistently provide a well-organised course that is taught effectively and supported through high-quality assessment and feedback.

Award categories 2023/24

Outstanding Digital Enhanced Teaching Award

Online learning is increasingly important. This award is for somebody who has particularly engaged students through an effective use of technology.

It recognises staff who have used innovative teaching techniques, assessment tasks or learning materials to support learning and engagement or helped students to enhance their digital skills.

Outstanding Teaching and Employability Award

Lecturers, programme support teams and others play a key role in improving students' employability skills and knowledge within programmes.

This award is for staff who have effectively incorporated employability - be it in the forms of skills, knowledge, or guidanceinto a programme or course unit.

Outstanding Professional Services Award

This award is for staff who help to run programmes or work in student support who have positively contributed to the student experience.

The Professional Services award celebrates the non-academic staff who provide help and support with a positive attitude and who have demonstrated exceptional care or assistance towards students.

They may have helped students through a difficult academic or pastoral situation or gone ‘the extra mile’ to ensure an issues with courses has been effectively resolved.

Outstanding Programme of the Year Award

This award is for courses/programmes that have exceeded students' expectations as well as the inspring, motivating and/or innovative teams that teach and organise them.

Students may nominate staff who they believe have contributed to making a programme one worth talking about, and/or have encouraged students to aim high, to challenge and to believe in themselves.

Outstanding Academic Advisor Award

The Oustanding Academic Advisor award is for academic advisors who have provided an outstanding level of advice and guidance.

This award recognises academic advisors who help students thrive by building strong relationships with their advisees, and by supporting, motivating and encouraging them.

Perhaps they have helped student develop their academic skills, made the transition from school to university easier or given their advisees great guidance on academic and practical matters related to their studies.

Students may nominate academic advisors who have gone the ‘extra mile’, providing support and guidance that has had a positive impact on their development.

Outstanding Undergraduate Dissertation (or long essay/research project) Award

This award celebrates supervisors who have had a significant and positive impact on undergraduate (UG) students’ experience of writing a dissertation.

It celebrates UG dissertation supervisors who have provided exceptional advice and support to develop students' skills as independent researchers.

The may have challenged and inspired students in their independent thinking and learning, encouraging them to develop their own lines of enquiry and think critically about their work.

Outstanding Postgraduate Taught Dissertation Supervisor Award

This award recognises supervisors who have had a significant, positive impact on postgraduate taught (PGT) students’ experience of planning and writing a dissertation.

It is for PGT dissertation supervisors who have provided exceptional advice and support to develop students' skills as independent researchers.

They may have challenged and inspired students in their independent thinking and learning, encouraging them to develop their own lines of enquiry and think critically.

Please note that this award is not for PhD supervisors and any such submissions will not be considered.
