Programme amendments

The University's Teaching and Learning Delivery Team provides guidance on the levels of approval and documentation required for different types of programme amendments:

Programme amendments are classified as “major” or “minor” according to whether or not they are significant in intent and effect. A full set of guidance on the amendment processes in place in the Faculty of Humanities can be found in the following document, this includes details of the levels of approval for each type of amendment:

Any proposed changes should be discussed with your Faculty Teaching and Learning Officer (Education Development, Policy, Procedure and Practice) to determine the exact requirements for approval.

Programme amendments should be proposed via the University’s Interim Programme Amendment Form, supported by a revised Programme Specification plus other documentation as necessary (i.e. updated unit specification, revised marketing or financial information dependant on the type of change proposed).

In order to support colleagues, the Faculty has created an annotated version of the programme amendment form to ensure all required information is captured for approval.

Major amendments

Approval level: School then Faculty

Major Amendments should adhere to the Faculty of Humanities Framework for the Approval of Major Amendments or for validated partners the Faculty of Humanities Approval of Major Amendments Framework for Validated Partners, where applicable.

Once a major amendment has received School approval, it can be submitted to the Faculty Teaching and Learning Officer assigned to your School. Major amendments will normally be considered at the next scheduled Faculty Quality, Standards, Design and Enhancement (QSDE) Committee unless they fall into one of the below areas which can be approved at school level then ratified at Faculty:

Addition/change one core or compulsory unit on the same programme
Removal of optional course unit(s), where it significantly reduces optionality or impacts programme ILOs
Summative assessment changes, introduction or removal of a mode of assessment
Addition of PGCert or PGDip as an entry award
New or Revised Programme Title where there are no changes to content or ILOs of the programme
Mode of delivery changes that significantly increase or decrease contact hours

Minor amendments

Approval level: School

Minor amendments should not require alteration of programme intended learning outcomes (as defined in the Programme Specification). Minor programme amendments should be reported to the Faculty Teaching and Learning Officer (Education Development, Policy, Procedure and Practice) assigned to your School so that it can monitor the nature and cumulative effect of minor amendments to programmes. Schools should ensure that they are compliant with CMA requirements when approving minor amendments.

Key deadlines

The links below provide a schedule to assist with the programme development process. When setting up new programmes or submitting a programme amendment, in addition to the key deadlines, Schools should be aware of key recruitment and marketing events which can be discussed with the Faculty Marketing and Recruitment Team.
