Handbook is a document produced to provide relevant information or instructions to staff or students in order to carry out their role or studies.

Head of School (HoS) is responsible for the leadership, management and development of a School in support of The University of Manchester’s agenda for world-leading research, outstanding learning and student experience and commitment to social responsibility.

Head of School Administration (HoSA) provides overall leadership for, and management of, all PS staff within a School and works closely with the Head of School in support of The University of Manchester’s agenda.

Health and Safety Course Unit is a mandatory, non-credit bearing, on-line course which students have to complete as part of their registration.

HEI is an abbreviation for a Higher Education Institute e.g. The University of Manchester.

HESA Teaching Quality Information (TQI) is data supplied by HESA after submission of the University’s HESA annual student data return. The derived statistics concentrate on 4 main areas: entry qualifications; UCAS Tariff Scores; continuation; achievement.

Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) collects a range of data every year UK-wide from universities, higher education colleges and other differently funded providers of higher education. This data is then provided to UK governments and higher education funding bodies to support their work in regulating and funding higher education providers. In addition information derived from the data is published as official statistics and in many accessible formats for use by a wide range of organisations and individuals for a variety of purposes. High quality describes quality of education and/or service which can consistently lead to credible and recognised positive outcomes for learners. High quality is the minimum level of quality that is expected of all providers of UK HE (QAA, 2023). 

Holistic learning ensures that the entire learning experience for students works cohesively and develops the student in a well-rounded way.  

Home Students is the term given to those students who study at the University who are normally domiciled in the UK or the European Union.

Horizontal Curriculum Planning is planning the curriculum to ensure that there is minimal duplication between units at the same level and that connections are made between content and skills acquisition in different units within the same broad programme of study to enable students to have a clear understanding of the structure of their programme of study. This includes planning important dates with the academic year to avoid unnecessary clashes in the submission of assessed coursework.

Humanities eNews is the Humanities staff monthly enewsletter which enables staff to highlight and share their news stories and developments with other departments in the Faculty. The aim is to improve communication and information sharing across Schools and Institutes.  In each issue Keith Brown shares his thoughts on issues within the Faculty. Humanities New Academic Programme (HNAP) is a programme designed to ensure that new academics are fully equipped to work effectively within the University of Manchester in relation to the full breadth of tasks associated within post.  Attendance is a requirement of the probationary period. Humanities Research Strategy Committee (HRSC) is chaired by the Vice-Dean for Research (Humanities) and its members include School Research Directors and research-focused Associate Deans.  The Committee’s remit is to provide leadership and strategic direction for the development of all aspects of research for the Faculty of Humanities.  Find out more about the Committee’s membership and remit.
