Anne Arnold, Campus Masterplan Communications Manager
What is your role at the University?
I work at the University part-time and my job is to ensure that we’re letting the right audiences know about the University’s Campus Masterplan, from staff and students to philanthropists and politicians. My role is to ensure that we’re talking about the project in a consistent and engaging way.
How will the Campus Masterplan impact on Humanities?
The Campus Masterplan is a huge ten year project, so every member of staff will have some contact with it along the way. Time-wise, we’re currently halfway through the Masterplan. The University is currently redeveloping the Alliance Manchester Business School, and investing in the Samuel Alexander and Mansfield Cooper buildings for the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures. It is also creating Brunswick Park, a new public parkland for staff, students and visitors. While in the short term these and the many other Masterplan construction projects will inevitably lead to some disruption around campus, they are part of a bigger picture. The ambition is to create the best environment for world-class research and to contribute towards an outstanding learning and student experience, so we can effectively compete on the global stage. This will support The University of Manchester’s global ambitions to be among the top 25 in the world by 2020.
What experience have you brought to your role?
In my last job I worked for the British Council, providing communications advice to teams based across the world. My line manager was based in Belgrade and I travelled abroad a lot. Prior to that, I worked as a PR manager for a national lobbying organisation campaigning for more affordable housing in Britain, and before that at the Cabinet Office. So I’m used to dealing with complicated projects involving lots of people.
Any tips on where to go for lunch near campus?
I’m tempted not to tell you, as it’s so good I’m worried that it will get popular and I won’t get a table! My favourite place to go for lunch is the Indian Tiffin Room on First Street (next to HOME). It’s a ten minute stroll but worth the walk – if you like Southern Indian food you will love it. Try the panipuri.
