New Academics Programme (NAP)

An academic career at The University of Manchester involves a broad range of duties including teaching practice, student support, administration, and research.  The University’s New Academics Programme (NAP) offers you the right training during your probationary period and is designed to support you across the full breadth of duties associated with your post.  Attendance on the NAP is mandatory for all new academic staff, however requirements will vary depending on your career track.

It is mandatory, as part of your probation, that you attend and successfully complete all NAP assessments relevant to your career track (see probationary arrangements for newly appointed academic staff).  The full NAP comprises of teaching, research and social responsibility elements as well as fulfilling various aims relevant to your role.  For more information about the mandatory requirements for your career track, please see Summary of NAP requirements, subject to career track.

As part of the FSE New Academics Programme, staff will be awarded a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), via the University of Manchester Advance HE Fellowship Scheme, the Univeristy's accredited route for Advance HE Fellowships. An Advance HE fellowship provides recognition that staff meets the requirements of the Advance HE Professional Standard Framework (PSF) for teaching and learning in Higher Education.

Registering

If you are a new academic at the University within FSE you can enrol on the FSE New Academics Programme by using the "FSE NAP Enrolement Form" on the FSE NAP Sharepoint Site.

Blackboard community space

The FSE NAP community space on Blackboard provides valuable information on the full FSE NAP programme content, recommended reading and the FSE NAP assessment strategy. You will be able to access this once you are registered on the programme.

NAP schedule and attendance

All new members of academic staff are required to attend and fully engage in all of the mandatory units according to their current career track as detailed on the FSE NAP Sharepoint Site.

Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning

If, prior to starting your academic contract and the University of Manchester, you hold an Advance HE Fellowship or any Level or a Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (or Equivalent) you many be eligible for Accrediation of Prior Certificated Learning.

On registering for the FSE New Academics Programme you will be asked to indicated if you have been awarded and Advace HE Fellowship and/or a PGCert in HE and provide a copy of your certificate(s). You will then receive an Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning form to complete and request support from your Head of Department.

If supported by your Head of Department, an Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning, will mean attendance at some sessions will be optional, and some assessments will not be required. Full information is available on the FSE NAP Sharepoint Site.

 

Assessment and submission

To complete the Faculty of Science and Engineering New Academics Programme, you will need to pass the assessments required for your contract type. Information on the assessment requirements for each contract type can be found on the FSE NAP Sharepoint Site.

Faculty Written Assessments

There are two faculty written assessments for the FSE NAP, FSE60001: Introduction to Teaching Practice and FSE60002: Assessment and Feedback. Each written assessment is a reflection on elements of your teaching practice. Assessment briefs, rubrics and deadlines can be found on the FSE NAP Sharepoint Site. Assessments are submitted via the FSE NAP Sharepoint Site.

Advance HE Fellowships

As part of the FSE NAP you are required to be awarded a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). The University of Manchester Advance HE Fellowship Scheme is the single awarding pathway for Advace HE Fellowships at the university.

We recommend that FSE NAP participants enrol onto the Advance HE Fellowship Scheme in the second year of their contract. This gives sufficient time to engage withe FSE NAP Training sessions and the Faculty Written Assessments, which provide formative feedback beneficial for writing your Advance HE Fellowship submission.

Online Assessments

Three online training courses and assessments are required for the FSE NAP:

  • Unconscious Bias
  • Diversity in the Workplace
  • Academic Advising

NAP completion

Following attendance at all mandatory sessions and passing all assessments, you will be issued with a certificate by the Faculty, confirming your completion of the NAP.

NAP support

Senior mentors

The role of the senior mentor is to oversee and manage the individual mentors at Department level. They are also able to offer strategic guidance, support and advice to you where needed. Contact details for the senior mentor in each Department, and information on the senior mentor role can be found on the FSE NAP Sharepoint Site.

Individual mentors

As well as a senior mentor, you are also allocated an individual mentor who can provide more general advice and support in regards to both teaching practice and research. The individual mentor in essence, acts as a critical friend. Your senior mentor should be able to advise you who your mentor is.

Writing reflectively about teaching practice

The University of Manchester Institute of Teaching and Learning runs two monthly workshops supporting staff to reflect on their teaching practice. You can book onto these workshops using the training catalogue:
