Our Directorate

The Directorate for the Student Experience (DSE) was established to facilitate a joined up approach to the delivery of services to students throughout the student lifecycle and to provide leadership to enhance the student experience.

The DSE is made up of 4 divisions, and a central Directorate Office.

Division of Campus Life

Campus Life combines many of the support services that have a direct impact on the day-to-day lives of our students. The busy hub of our Division is located in the Atrium in University Place, although we also deliver services across the main campus and beyond. 

Division of International Development

The International Development Division is responsible for delivery of the university’s Global Influence Strategy including the recruitment of international students, the development of international partnerships and relationships which enhance the university’s global reputation and increase the quality and impact of our research.

The International Office

The International Office plan and implement recruitment activities overseas including supporting the production of key publications, attending events overseas, providing guidance on international qualifications and conducting pre-departure briefings. The team supports academic schools by sharing knowledge and providing information about the international market. 

International Relations

The International Relations team is responsible for managing the University’s international strategic partnerships, managing the relationships with the University’s key international sponsors (including governments), Equity and Merit and Humanitarian Scholarships, and the support of Arrival and Welcome. 

The Placements and International Programmes Office part of the team promotes the positive and valuable experiences that studying abroad can deliver and encourage students to take the opportunity (if appropriate to their studies). They provide information, advice and guidance on the various programmes available and handle the administration of the Exchange, Erasmus and Study Abroad programmes.

The overall International team support the development and implementation of the Internationalisation Strategy.

Division of Residences and Sport

Residences and Sport have a key role in ensuring that all of our students are housed within a safe and suitable environment. Our teams manage the administration and operation of 8000 student bedrooms geographically spread across the University campus from the city centre to Fallowfield. 

Accommodation and Administration

The Accommodation and Administration Team manage the entire journey from point of enquiry to the departure from accommodation. Functions include processing applications, allocating rooms, dealing with front line enquiries and issues within the halls. The team also supports DSE colleagues with events including Open Days and contribute to publications that support student recruitment. Staff run advice sessions for PS colleagues across the University to improve knowledge about our accommodation offer. Finally the team lead on ensuring UUK Code compliance, manage complaints and monitor customer satisfaction.

UoM Sport

As well as developing and maintaining University sports facilities, UoM Sport provide sport and fitness opportunities from beginner level through to team representing the University in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) and also provide support to student 'dual career' athletes balancing their academic commitments with elite sport aspirations.

Domestic and Portering Services

These services maintain the physical environment of the halls of residences including housekeeping and waste removal. The staff in these teams are regulalrly in and around the Halls and report any repairs or maintenance work to the University estates team. 

Residential Life

Help is on hand in all University-owned or leased accommodation from our designated team of ResLife Coordinators and ResLife Advisors. They provide welfare support and guidance to students within the residences and work with students to create opportunities to develop their social skills, widen intellectual horizons, and facilitate learning outside the academic environment through the Manchester ResLife Programme.

Manchester Student Homes

Manchester Student Homes (MSH) is a student-focused service providing housing and community related information and guidance to students. Based in the University of Manchester's Students' Union, MSH runs a landlord accreditation scheme and offers support to students in relation to property searches, housing inspections and providing housing advice and contract checking. MSH also works closely with partnership agencies such as Greater Manchester Police and Manchester City Council to make sure those who live in off-campus communities are supported on all aspects of community living.

Directorate Office

The Directorate Office is at the very centre of the directorate, facilitating processes which have an impact on all of the divisions and teams within it. Members of the team provide support to the Director for the Student Experience and also coordinate the core administrative processes such as finance, HR, training, planning, health and safety and risk and compliance.
