Safeguarding training
We also offer a suite of online and in-person safeguarding training for colleagues at the University who come into contact with children under the age of 18 or adults at risk.
SAFE215 Safeguarding Children (Online)
Safeguarding Children training is essential for anyone who comes into contact with children, either at work or as a volunteer (legally, a child is anyone under the age of 18). This course covers the difficult subject of child abuse; considering the different kinds of abuse, how to spot the signs, and how to correctly record and report your concerns.
This course aims to provide you with the necessary information to:
- Understand your safeguarding responsibilities;
- Recognise signs of abuse in children;
- Understand how to respond to a disclosure of abuse;
- Understand how to record and report appropriately.
At the end of this course, you will:
- Know how to work towards best practice in line with the Children’s and Young Persons Act 2008;
- Know how to recognise the signs of abuse in a child and the importance of a child centred approach;
- Understand the importance of reporting and recording circumstances or evidence of abuse.
The course will take approximately one hour to complete.

SAFE216 Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults (Online)
The Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults course is for anyone who works with, helps or supports adults at risk, or adults in a vulnerable situation. While the course material is focused on adults in a care setting, the material, underlying principles and signposting to supporting legislation are all relevant to our sector.
This course aims to provide you with the necessary information to:
- Understand your safeguarding responsibilities;
- Recognise signs of abuse in adults;
- Understand how to respond to a disclosure of abuse.
At the end of this course, you will:
- Know which groups of adults might be at risk;
- Know about and work towards compliance with The Mental Capacity Act and other legislations;
- Know about the different types of abuse that adults may experience and how to effectively deal with it should it occur.
The course will take approximately one hour to complete.

TMS 60 Child Protection Policy & Guidance (In-person)
This two hour in-person course is aimed at University staff working with children (legally, a child is anyone under the age of 18).
By the end of the session those taking part will:
- Be aware of the possible forms and indications of child abuse
- Take appropriate action if they become aware of possible cases of child abuse
- Have a good general overview of the University’s policy and know where to go for further information and advice
- Have an understanding of the Disclosure and Barring Service process and appropriate checks required when working with children and/or adults
- Child Protection Policy and Guidance aims to provide a general overview of the University’s Child Protection Policy and the responsibilities of those involved in, taking part in, or leading University activities involving children.

TLC X61 Safeguarding Essentials in the Humanitarian and Development sector (online)
This online course is aimed at members of the University community who work overseas in a humanitarian or development context.
- The course will build your understanding of what safeguarding is in the humanitarian and development sector.
- It will look at a diverse range of safeguarding issues affecting vulnerable groups we serve and focus on the ‘non-negotiables for conduct’ in safeguarding.
The course will take approximately one and a half hours to complete.

TPREVENT0517 Prevent Training (Online)
This online course is aimed at members of the University community who need to understand their responsibilities in relation to preventing the risk of people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.
You may have been directed here by your line manager or simply want to know more about Prevent.
By the end of the session those taking part will:
- Recognise potential vulnerabilities;
- Know the appropriate action to take;
- Understand when to refer to the Channel program for additional support.
The course will take approximately one hour to complete.
