Breakthrough has been providing bespoke training on the Social Model of Disability for organisations for several years. Training is designed by and delivered by disabled people, to provide a co-produced and well-informed learning experience. EqualEdge, Breakthrough UK's social enterprise is delivering the training, allowing Breakthrough to deliver more services to d/Deaf and disabled people.
Training provides an introduction to the disabled community, an overview of the Social Model of Disability, an understanding of how to apply it within the workplace, a review of the Equality Act, an introduction to Foundations for Change Framework for Disabled Inclusion in the Workplace and having conversations with disabled staff one on one.
Post training, attendees are equipped to apply the social model in the workplace, and methods of action planning for change. This supports all staff in creating an accessible work environment which supports greater staff wellbeing for all staff.

Disability History Month - Unseen Aware with Simon Houghton
Thursday 5th December 12 noon – 1pm
The Disabled Staff Network are delighted to be working with Simon Haughton to deliver a lunch and learn session about ‘Unseen Aware’, a movement to help organisations and their staff to better understand unseen disabilities such as deafness, epilepsy, ADHD, autism etc.
The Unseen Aware movement is more than just training – it is designed in such a way to embed behaviour change over time.
Our speaker Simon Houghton was born with a severe hearing loss.
He has launched a movement called Unseen Aware, which aims to remove the fear of talking about disability – and gives staff greater confidence when talking to someone who has a hidden disability or condition – such as autism, ADHD, hearing loss, fibromyalgia, EDS, MS, stammering for example.can
In this talk, he is going to discuss “masking”, and what we can do to help – and ultimately how we can become Unseen Disability Allies.
Tickets can be reserved using TicketSource.
