How we align to other internal and external initiatives

The Faculty is in full support of delivering initiatives and outputs to progress all key themes of the Technician Commitment, of which The University of Manchester is a signatory.

The Review will aim to deliver on aspects of the Technician Commitment and its drivers/objectives can be mapped directly onto the four pillars of the Commitment as shown in this table.

The review will also address several recommendations in the TALENT Commission Report regarding technical skills, roles and careers in UK higher education and research as outlined below.

TALENT Commission Report recommendations for employers that will be addressed by the FBMH Technical Review:

Employers of technical staff should employ a strategic approach to ensure the sustainability and appropriateness of technical skills and careers.

A key element of the workforce planning workstream is to ensure that we have strategies in pace to ensure the sustainability of technical skills, that we area able to meet future requirements in capability and skills.

Employers of technical staff should undertake targeted and specific action to address the equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) challenges facing the technical community.

We are collecting and analysing demographic data about our technical workforce to understand our current position and where we may need to address any EDI issues.

Employers of technical staff should provide clear and consistent guidance to ensure technical contributions are costed appropriately...

Employers of technical staff should provide clear and consistent guidance to ensure technical contributions are costed appropriately and eligibility requirements for existing funding opportunities should be reviewed to ensure inclusion of technical staff where appropriate.

Our finance reporting and costing workstream aims to ensure that we can cost technical time appropriately and develop guidance regarding this.

Employers of technical staff should ensure provision and access to a range of professional development opportunities tailored to technical roles and careers.

We will create development plans for our different technical teams, centred around the key skills required at the different grades and areas.

Employers of technical staff should ensure the contributions of technical staff are visible and recognised.

We will define and articulate the different roles of our technical staff and ensure that technical roles are recognised and rewarded for their contributions.
