Researchers urged to take the chance to shape Government thinking

ISC launch

Our researchers are being urged to take the chance to shape Government thinking, following the launch of a major new policy commission in London.

The Industrial Strategy Commission, led jointly by Policy@Manchester and the Sheffield Political Economy Research Institute (SPERI), is authoritative and independent inquiry into the development of a new, long-term industrial strategy for the UK.

The Prime Minister recently unveiled a new Green Paper and a ten-point plan for a new, more interventionist, industrial strategy, including investing in science, developing skills, upgrading infrastructure and ensuring growth is shared across the country.

The Commission, chaired by leading economist Dame Kate Barker, will report in September and provide evidence-based policy recommendations for the development of the new industrial strategy.

The launch event, held at the Royal Society, was attended by key advisers from Downing Street and Whitehall, MPs, national media and senior industry figures.

Speakers included Carolyn Fairbairn, Director General of the CBI, and Jürgen Maier, Chief Executive of Siemens UK, as well as Prof Luke Georghiou, our Vice-President for Research and Innovation.

An open call for evidence has been announced and is open until 2 May. Visit:
