Dementia Law Clinic wins Best Pro Bono/Community Initiative at the 2017 Manchester Legal Awards

Legal Advice Centre award win

The University’s Legal Advice Centre was honoured at the Manchester Legal Awards 2017 for its Dementia Law Clinic, run in partnership with national mental health charity Making Space.

The Centre was presented with the Best Pro Bono/Community Initiative award at the Midland Hotel, hosted by the Manchester Law Society, attended by the best and the brightest in the Manchester legal sector.

Director of the Dementia Law Clinic Neil Allen said: “This award, the third the Clinic has received since it was first piloted in 2015, shows the strength and quality of work that our students do at the Legal Advice Centre.

“As well as our partners Making Space, without whom we would not be able to reach nearly as many clients, thanks goes to our outstanding volunteer lawyers who supervise our students. It is because of their dedication and commitment that the clinic has been able to grow to the level that it has. After this success we plan to develop the Dementia Law Clinic even further, including reaching more people in rural areas.”

He added: “With lots of changes at the Legal Advice Centre in recent months we are looking forward to a big, bright future that will be of great benefit to our students and further establish The University of Manchester as a leader in Clinical Legal Education.”
