Pay deductions for strike days 2018

19 Mar 2018

Industrial Action by University and College Union (UCU) Members

Dear Colleagues

The University trusts all employees to have informed their line manager that they have taken strike action immediately after they have returned to work following each period of strike action. In such circumstances, the University is entitled to withhold pay and it has been decided to deduct pay at 1/365th of annual salary for each day of strike action taken.

All staff who declare themselves as being on strike will have their pay deducted as follows:

February Strike Days (weeks 1 and 2)

Week one: Thursday 22 and Friday 23 February (two days)

Week two: Monday 26, Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 February (three days)

In the above periods, deductions from pay for each of the declared days of action will be made as follows;

  • end of month payroll - March pay
  • mid-month payroll - April pay

March Strike Days (week 3)

Week three: Monday 5, Tuesday 6, Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 March (four days)

In the above period, deductions from pay for each of the declared days of action will be made as follows;

  • end of month payroll - April pay
  • mid-month payroll - May pay

March Strike Days (week 4)

Week four: Monday 12, Tuesday 13, Wednesday 14, Thursday 15 and Friday 16 March (five days).

In the above period, deductions from pay for each of the declared days of action will be made as follows;

  • end of month payroll - May pay
  • mid-month payroll - June pay

Human Resources will not be able to respond to individual requests for details of the actual deductions to be made; however, payslips will be available in accordance with normal timescales each month via “MyView”.

Where any late notifications of strike action are received, then the above deduction periods may vary and employees will then have their pay deductions commence in the next practicable payroll.

Should there be any further strike days, managers and staff will be informed of these and when the deductions will be made.
