Junk email filtering - Managing junk email

We now have a new method for submitting all junk email to our filtering service

Over the past few weeks, we have replaced our junk email filtering system. See previous StaffNet articles for information:

While we have noticed an improvement, it’s possible that – as is the case with all junk email filters – some unwanted messages may still reach your inbox.

You can help us keep the University safe - it's quick and easy

Whether it's malicious or just a nuisance, please forward us any junk or phishing emails. But don't just click the normal 'Forward' icon; Forwarding us junk or phishing messages as an attachment helps us to identify the real source of the message.

It's very quick and easy to submit a junk or phishing email to us, and it'll only take you about ten seconds. You can do this in one of two ways.

Option 1: Using Microsoft Outlook 2010

  1. Select the junk email message
  2. Click “More” (next to the “Forward” button) and select “Forward as attachment”
  3. In the new message window that pops up, send the email to one of the email addresses below.

Option 2: Using Outlook Web App

  1. Right-click (or Ctrl+click on a Mac) on the junk email message
  2. Click "Forward as attachment"
  3. In the new message window that pops up, send the email to one of the email addresses below.

Which email address should I use to report this message?

You don't need to explain why you've sent the message. Everything we need to know will be in that attachment!

Never reply to suspected junk email, click any links or open any associated attachments (as these more than likely will contain viruses). Replying or clicking an 'unsubscribe' link could confirm to the sender that your email is in use and they will send you more. The only way to be completely safe is to delete any suspect messages.
