Want to become a school governor?

03 Apr 2017

Join our award-winning initiative to support local schools – and boost your career

The school governor initiative, now in its sixth year, continues to hit new highs with an increased number of staff becoming school governors in recent months.

With staff numbers standing at just under 200 governors and Alumni numbers above 350, the University has beaten many larger organisations to the top spot in governor recruitment tables and continues to maintain a strong position in the recruitment tables of our partners SGOSS and Inspiring Governance.

But we’d like to do even better – and if you take up the challenge, you’ll learn new skills, improve your work life and become part of a supportive network.

School governance is a voluntary opportunity open to all members of staff and the role is carried out by all age groups at all different stages of their career and in all parts of the University.

The initiative has had many successes since it began, and received numerous awards including The Times Higher Education Award 2014 and The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service 2016.

A 2014 survey of our governors demonstrated that almost all volunteers had gained new skills and in some cases this had had a direct impact in gaining promotions and new responsibilities in their job role.

The University supports staff governors in many ways through its internal network and in particular, will provide reasonable amounts of paid time off work during normal working hours (in addition to annual leave) where necessary.

The network has access to an annual conference, three network meetings per year featuring external speakers, training opportunities and a regular news bulletin to help keep informed of local and national news and events.
