Stand up for science

07 Feb 2017

Free media workshop for early career researchers

Cancer research lab

The University is hosting the Standing up for Science media workshop for early career researchers and scientists in all sciences, engineering and medicine (PhD students, post-docs or equivalent in first job).

This full day event – on Friday, 7 April, 10.30am to 5pm – is free.

Join us to find out how to make your voice heard in public debates about science. Meet scientists who have engaged with the media and learn from respected science journalists about how the media works, and how to respond and comment, and what journalists expect from scientists.

Previous participants include Manchester Pharmacy School researcher Lisa Heaney: “Many of us will have been infuriated by inaccurate reporting of research findings in the media. Have you ever seen a headline promising a huge breakthrough or a wonder drug, only to find that the research underlying the claim said no such thing? Could you even find the evidence so you could check it?

“It would be wrong to think that the responsibility of accurately portraying scientific discoveries is the media’s alone. We have our part to play, by making our research (and ourselves) accessible to as many people as possible.”
