Lunchtime Strollers visit Maggie's Manchester

In 2016 the University’s Lunchtime Strollers took part in the Maggie’s Culture Crawl – part night-walk, part cultural adventure – to raise money for the charity.

They had exclusive access to buildings including the Whitworth Art Gallery, London Road Fire Station and Chetham’s Library and raised £700 for Maggie’s, which offers free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their families and friends.

The Lunchtime Strollers were invited to tour the Maggie’s centre in Manchester to meet some of the staff and volunteers.

Ruth Tobi, Maggie’s Fundraising Officer, shared the experiences of some of the visitors to the centre who are living with cancer.

Marion, one of the regular visitors, told them: “The impact on family and friends is one of the hardest things to deal with – it’s great to be able to talk to others in a similar situation without the fear of upsetting people. I feel that I can say anything to anyone here and Maggie’s has been my sanctuary.”

Maggie’s Manchester has a number of connections with the University.  It was designed by world renowned architect and Manchester alumnus Lord Norman Foster, is located next to the University’s Cancer Research Centre and is currently displaying art that is on loan from The Whitworth art gallery.  Recently a number of students from the University cycling club also helped raise money on a cycling event.

A number of the Strollers are already committed to taking part in 2017’s Culture Crawl, describing it as one of their “best experiences.”
