General Counsel Chris Petty to retire in 2018

08 Dec 2017

Chris Petty, General Counsel, will retire from the University on the 31st March 2018 after more than eight years in post

Chris Petty

Chris joined the University in 2009 and was at that time the only in-house lawyer - apart from the Contracts Team - and the first General Counsel in Higher Education.

He was recruited to establish a comprehensive full-service legal function.  This he has fully accomplished, with his team now providing legal advice on all aspects of the University’s activities, including: Employment/HR; Information Governance; Student matters; Estates; Procurement; IT; State Aid; Transactions; and supporting a wide spectrum of Compliance and Risk matters.

Chris has also made a wider contribution to the University as a member of Planning and Resources Committee, the Gift Oversight Group and numerous other wide-ranging working groups.  He has advised the Board on legal matters and supported a range of significant ‘corporate’ deals and initiatives.

A process to appoint a Director of the Directorate of Legal Affairs and Board Secretariat will begin in the New Year.
