A first for UK Higher Education - leading the way in IT security

Our University is the first institution in the UK to introduce 2-factor authentication to IT accounts.

On Tuesday 21 November, we became the first HE institution in the UK to introduce 2-factor authentication as part of our IT login process. Desktop email is currently protected in this way, with other services to be added in time.

This is a huge achievement and the technical work from IT Services to make this happen should be commended. Their successful ‘ Come fly with us’ communications campaign also meant that over 16,300 people signed up to the service ahead of the change.

The next phase of work will look to protect email accessed via the Outlook Web App with 2-factor authentication. This is likely to take place early in 2018, after the January exams.
