Our University is the first institution in the UK to introduce 2-factor authentication to IT accounts.

On Tuesday 21 November, we became the first HE institution in the UK to introduce 2-factor authentication as part of our IT login process. Desktop email is currently protected in this way, with other services to be added in time.

This is a huge achievement and the technical work from IT Services to make this happen should be commended. Their successful ‘ Come fly with us’ communications campaign also meant that over 16,300 people signed up to the service ahead of the change.

Professor Nalin Thakkar, Associate Vice President and Senior Sponsor for the Programme, said: “I’d like to express my thanks to all involved for their commitment to make this change a success and in making our University leaders in IT Security across UK Higher Education.”

The next phase of work will look to protect email accessed via the Outlook Web App with 2-factor authentication. This is likely to take place early in 2018, after the January exams.

As well as a whole host of information on the IT Services website, there’s also a comprehensive list of answers to your frequently asked questions about the new way to login.
